What BEATSURFING is known for
Beatsurfing is a creative iPad MIDI-controller and instrument-builder created by the Belgian 'controllerism' duo Herrmutt Lobby (originally with Vlek records, now developed as Beatsurfing 2 by DRUW Audio), best known for letting users draw their own colorful, gesture-based controllers and 'surf' across them rather than just tapping. It's praised as a genuinely novel, musical and fun way to perform, with interacting objects ('behaviors') that multiply what a few shapes can play. The brand has since expanded into AUv3 plugin support and a small set of in-house audio plugins (e.g. beatfader, 7DeadlySnares).
- An innovative, freeform instrument-builder concept—draw custom controllers from shapes (line, circle, polygon, fader) and play via gliding 'surfing' gestures instead of conventional pads
- Its signature 'behaviors'/connections that let on-screen objects interact and modulate one another, so just three or four objects can trigger complex sequences that would need many pads elsewhere
- Credibility from its creators—the respected controllerism collective Herrmutt Lobby—with deep experience in custom MIDI controllers and live performance
- Being intuitive, deep, and fun even for non-musicians, fast to prototype layouts, and easy to integrate into any studio/live rig via MIDI, Virtual MIDI, Ableton Link and iOS apps
- Ongoing expansion in Beatsurfing 2—AUv3 plugin use, sample import/trim, a performance looper and instrument catalog—plus in-house audio plugins like beatfader and 7DeadlySnares
